Purpose - VRSLY Devotional - 01.10.17

What is your word for the year?  Every year, my wife Brooke and I pick a word for the year.  A word that we want to define our year to come.  Last year, my word was joy.  I had found myself living a pretty joy-less life.  I was getting frustrated by things that shouldn't have mattered and not spending time rejoicing and enjoying the things that God was doing in my life.

So, I focused on being joyful...and it worked.  2016 was one of the best years of my life.  Brooke even said to me on multiple occasions, "You are just different, in the best way possible."

It took focus though.  It took reminders.  It took acknowledging all the things that brought me joy and thanking God for them daily.  I had to ask Brooke to call me out when I wasn't being joyful.

This year I picked the word PURPOSE.  I want 2017 to be a year lived with purpose.  We live in a world of distractions.  We can look at our phone to check a text and spend the next two hours watching videos of cats.  I want to avoid that because I want purpose to define my actions this year.

If I am working, I want to work with purpose.  If I am talking to my wife, I want to shut down the devices so our conversation can have purpose.  If I am playing with my daughter, I want to be all in and play with purpose.  If I am tired, I want to take a nap with purpose, not put on the TV and kind of nap and kind of watch TV.  I want purpose to define my year whether I am working hard or enjoying a hobby of mine.  I don't want to be half in multiple things.  I want to be all in on whatever is in front of me.

So, what is your word for the year?  I would suggest spending sometime thinking about it.  Explain to yourself why it is your word for the year.  Tell those closest to you what it is and to help you live it out.  Hopefully, at the end of the year, you will see a change in your life and heart.  Hopefully, the word you choose allows you to live a life more like the one Jesus lived.

We'd love to know your word and if you want to share why you picked it submit it as a devotional on our website so we can share it with others!
