"and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him." - Deuteronomy 30:20
When I was a kid, my dad used to take my two older brothers and I out on a rather small catamaran. Have you ever been on a tiny sailboat before? Sailing one of those is serious work. My father, bless his heart, in between shouting orders at my brothers, would shout for me to duck before the boom hit me in the head.
All of the hard work that goes into sailing finally pays off when the sails catch the wind just right. Sometimes that reward is short lived because the direction of the wind can change in an instant. Thinking of those times, I realize that like the wind, things inside me change just as quickly. In years past, I followed those changes and allowed them to affect my decisions, to my detriment. Heeding my feelings caused me to hurt the people I love most, hurt myself, and hurt the One that loves me most of all.
Instead of holding fast to the truths that Jesus wants us so desperately to cling to, I sought to placate my emotions, convinced that if I could just feel better, everything would be all right. Emotions and feelings change like the wind, and our feelings are rarely ever the truth.
The truth is that we are completely loved and that our heavenly Father wants only good things for us. Clinging to that, rather than the unsteadiness of what our sinful hearts understand, will surely lead to honoring God in our decisions. The next time uncertainty or pain comes your way, look to the Holy Spirit for comfort and hold fast to the truth.
