VRSLY has teamed up with Sam Palencia to bring you a week's worth of awesome artwork! We've gotten to know a little bit more about Sam during this collaboration and want to share our conversation so you can learn more about her!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself!
"My name is Sam Palencia. I am 21 years old and live in Riverside, California. I am entering my senior year of studies and have grown to love the art of hand-lettering. This summer I have had the opportunity to adventure around Bend, Oregon, and serve as a graphic design intern at Antioch Church. Through this, I have learned that my passion is in encouraging others to use their art as worship to our Creator. I have an awesome boyfriend who is the most supportive person I know, and my favorite thing to do is eat pizza together. You can see more of my work on my website, sampalencia.com."
2. What inspired you to come up with the designs you made for VRSLY?
"I am most inspired by the work of other designers and the desire to be constantly growing. Aside from that, I draw a lot of inspiration from listening to music, which was the case on most of these designs."
3. What is your process like?
"My process is fairly consistent. I start by sketching out the words or phrase in different layouts (Which makes my sketchbook look extremely chaotic if someone decides to look through it). Once I feel that I like the way the words are arranged, I use tracing paper to go over the designs and color them with black ink and scan them into the computer."
4. What is your hope for people when they use your designs?
"As I said before, I am extremely passionate that art can be such beautiful worship. My hope is that artists realize how much influence they have and that their influence can be used to spread the Gospel in such awesome ways. We have such a cool gift and it so wonderful that we can praise God through our creativity. Through my designs, I hope people are encouraged as well as inspired."
