About three months ago I started a new hobby - indoor bouldering. It's climbing on a rock wall without a harness to a height of 12-15 feet. Don't worry, there are pads below you and if you fall you shouldn't get hurt. I haven't yet, minus some cuts and tears on my "office hands."  Soon, I will have tough climber hands though! Last week, I was climbing at the gym and working on a problem (in bouldering, they call the aspects of different routes you climb problems). The problem I was working on involved jumping from two smaller holds two one somewhat rounded hold on...

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. - Jeremiah 29:11 I’ve heard this verse so many times throughout my life from various friends and family members trying to give me encouragement. It’s the stereotypical send-off verse for high school seniors as they prepare to go to college or start their full-time jobs. There was a point in my life when I was really struggling with depression. I felt beaten down and didn’t think I deserved any future at all. Everyone else could...

"Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat - for He grants sleep to those He loves." (Psalm 127:1-2) Reading this passage, I'm convicted. In the midst of midterms, essays, and busyness, I find myself spending less and less time with God yet, I find myself busier and more stressed than ever. The correlation is clear. There is a sense of peace that comes when we lean on God in...

I was running late this morning so I didn’t have as long of a quiet time as I normally do. I actually only read two verses this morning before I got a text that my ride was on his way to pick me up for breakfast. Here is what I read: So she laughed silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?”Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’ Is anything...

What is your word for the year?  Every year, my wife Brooke and I pick a word for the year.  A word that we want to define our year to come.  Last year, my word was joy.  I had found myself living a pretty joy-less life.  I was getting frustrated by things that shouldn't have mattered and not spending time rejoicing and enjoying the things that God was doing in my life. So, I focused on being joyful...and it worked.  2016 was one of the best years of my life.  Brooke even said to me on multiple occasions, "You are...
