This is an old olive tree in Jericho that is more than 100 years old! Despite growing in the heat of the desert, this ancient looking tree has thick roots, a solid trunk, a lush canopy of leaves and was still producing plenty of olives. The local residents proudly show off this amazing tree to visitors.
I think this olive tree is the perfect picture of a verse written 1000s of years ago by one of the kings of Israel named David who wrote: "… those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish." His point was, if you want to flourish and bear fruit in your spiritual journey then you have to have roots in your local church. This doesn’t mean simply attending a service on Sunday … it’s about planting deep roots in the house of God. It’s about belonging to a community of believers. It’s about getting involved and serving the community so you develop solid roots like this olive tree.
You can't continually uproot and replant a tree and expect it to thrive. In the same way, if you want to consistently produce fruits and stand tall when the heat of life is on, then you need to plant yourself in God’s House. What church are you planted in?
