Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. - 1 Thessalonians 5:11
A few years ago, I experienced a moment that changed me. I was driving on the back roads in my little town, and I passed a teenage girl walking along the side of the road. As I drove by, I noticed the rainbow array of bright colors in her hair.
The girl had colorful hair, and I loved it. I loved how funky it was, and I loved that she had the guts to wear it. Checking my rearview mirror to make sure no one was behind me, I put my Jeep in reverse and backed up until I was next to her.
“I love your hair!” I told her.
She turned towards me, and a huge smile spread across her face. “Thank you.” she beamed.
As I drove away, I watched her in my rearview mirror, and that smile didn’t leave her face. I’m sure that even after I turned at the stop sign, she kept right on smiling.
It was 1 minute added to my commute, but it had the power to change her entire countenance.
And as I thought about it later that day, I decided to keep at it. I’m trying to remember to take the time (and sometimes the risk) to tell people the good stuff I see - to point out their talents, to speak life to their strengths, to compliment their efforts, and to let them know how awesome I think they are. Sometimes it’s strangers, and other times, it’s the people under my own roof. I’m learning to be intentional about encouraging others, and guess what? It’s changing ME! I’m getting all the feel goods. I’m happier, more content, more joyful. When I encourage them, God encourages me.
Don’t miss the opportunity to tell your people, and even the strangers, how much you love their rockin’ rainbow hair!
