I cannot watch suspense movies. Cannot. In the high-tension moments, with the music screaming “BAD STUFF AHEAD!” I put my face in my hands, tense my shoulders to embrace my neck and DON'T WATCH.
Rationally, I know it’s just a movie, totally not real and (supposedly) entertaining. But I can’t deal with all that tension. I stick to comedies and romance, thank you much.
Truth is, it also can be my default in real life. Strained relationships, high-pressured situations, overloaded schedules, unmet goals, dreams on the back burner--I want to bury my face until it goes away; I want to duck under the covers and escape the story playing out in my life. Sometimes it just feels too hard and overwhelming.
Can you relate? I don’t think Jesus wants me to run for cover, but He understands me and all of my “less-than-arrived” places. #thankyouforyourgrace
And true to how He loves me, He does give me an escape. It’s called prayer.
Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. - Philippians 4:6-7, MSG
If you’re looking for an escape, start with Jesus.
